About Me

My art technique is contemporary 2-D mixed media painting. I use paint, photography, technology, fine art printmaking and any materials that work for me. My technique is very painterly, where color and space are important. My paintings are a process not planned rather informed by my life experiences and my love for exploration and learning. I either use vintage images or my own photography. My subject matters are a reflection of my ideas, and interests They often are a metaphor for life, with all its imperfections, irony, and humor I most often work in a series to explore these ideas. I use images from the past and present as icons to help create a visual language. I have traveled much of the world, lived in many different countries, speak different languages studied these cultures and learned. I hold a BS from the University of Vermont and returned to school to study fine art and graphic design. These have helped shape my unique perspective and enriched my sense of creativity.

Sustainable Development
Where Do You Stand

"In 1987, the United Nations released the Brundtland Report, which defines sustainable development as 'development which meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.'[8]
The United Nations 2005 World Summit Outcome Document refers to the "interdependent and mutually reinforcing pillars" of sustainable development as economic development, social development, and environmental protection.[9]
Indigenous peoples have argued, through various international forums such as the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and the Convention on Biological Diversity, that there are four pillars of sustainable development, the fourth being cultural. The Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity (UNESCO, 2001) further elaborates the concept by stating that "...cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature”; it becomes “one of the roots of development understood not simply in terms of economic growth, but also as a means to achieve a more satisfactory intellectual, emotional, moral and spiritual existence". In this vision, cultural diversity is the fourth policy area of sustainable development."

Happy Earth Day April 22, 2010

"Hydro Power 10"

"Solar Power 106"

"Earth Day is celebrated in the US on April 22 and is a day designed to inspire awareness and appreciation for the Earth's environment. ..."

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. Here is a link to the Earth Day Website
which gives the history of the movement.

As a contemporary artist I have been working on a Power/Energy Series using established icons and my own icons to promote awareness, keeping it light and interesting at the same time.

We all have the ability to make a change in our own way.

Happy Earth Day

Inspiration

On a trip through the local antique collectible stores here in Naples, FL I found this plaster bust of 1950's woman. It might have been used for a hat model, in the 50's, but not sure. It was selling for $175.00 so I didn't buy but took a picture with my iPhone. It might will turn up in one of my paintings some day. It really looks like a work of art and something that is not done in today's world.

Inspiration can be found everywhere.

Henry Moore
"Born Henry Spencer Moore - England - July 30, 1898 / Died - UK - August 31, 1986
Popular Henry Moore works include contemporary sculpture like "Four Piece Composition, 1934", "Recumbent Figure, 1938", "Reclining Figure, 1951", and "The Arch, 1969".
A Quote by Moore

" All art should have a certain mystery and should make demands on the spectator. Giving a sculpture or a drawing too explicit a title takes away part of that mystery so that the spectator moves on to the next object, making no effort to ponder the meaning of what he has just seen. Everyone thinks that he or she looks but they don't really, you know."

Something to ponder.

"What You Should Know About the Art Market"

I went to a lecture last night, Josh Baer a NY art advisor who publishes the Bear Faxt news letter was the lecturer. The title was "What You Should Know About the Art Market. He broke down the art market into primary, secondary and print. The primary market stays fairly steady such as gallery's, the secondary market auction houses fluctuates and the print market stays the same. Bear said there are more Artists in FL than Lawyers a very funny statement, be it fact or not. He said he follows only about 100 artists from all the thousands out there and that an artist has a very short time during his/her career when they make great art if they ever achieve that level. A man tends to be of fame earlier in his career and a woman later, MUCH later in life. He was asked how he determines if a piece of art is important. Baer said he asks himself "How does this piece fit into the history of art?" This answer creates a new ceiling for me.
One question from the group of attendees asked about sentimental art and referred to it as a not so good description of art and one to avoid. Here is what I found out about this subject.

Sen-ti-men-tal - 1. of or characterized by sentiment; showing or affected by emotion rather than reason; 2. sentimental value - value of a thing to a particular person because of its associations.

'Space Travel' (by AB) was chosen to represent the spirit of the Museum of Sentimental Art (MOSA). Its sentiment, whimsy, and imagination exemplify the content chosen for this museum. Personal art such as this can be generated by nostalgia, romantic attachment, fond remembrance, eccentricity, or just an individuals particular turn of mind.

In traditionally defined art, an object is created and its value is subsequently determined by the collective response of a community to the creator's exceptional skill or the object's larger social significance. Traditional museums exhibit the best in categories, examine history and culture, or educate with new ideas.

But a 'sentimental' object, or personal art, has significance to a small group, or perhaps just a single individual. Material and execution are not the point - it's the personal attachment that transforms it and establishes its value. It has a story, as do all the entries in MOSA.

If you have a chance to attend his lectures it is time well spent.
